Ear Pain in Adults

Common causes of ear pain in adults and what you should know.

Common Causes

  • Outer ear infection (otitis externa) — Research suggests moisture or irritation in the ear canal, like from swimming, may lead to bacterial growth and pain in adults.
  • Middle ear infection (otitis media) — Colds or allergies might block the Eustachian tube (tube connecting middle ear to throat), trapping fluid and causing infection.
  • TMJ disorders — Jaw joint problems, often from grinding teeth, could refer pain to the ear since nerves overlap.
  • Dental issues — Tooth abscesses or infections may send pain to the ear through shared nerves.
  • Sinus infections — Pressure from sinus congestion might cause referred ear pain.
